History and Purpose

Harbor House began as a day treatment program in 1980 for individuals who had recently been discharged from the state hospital.  Since that time it has served as both a treatment and drop-in center for clients served by Butler Behavioral Health Services, Inc.   Harbor House is now a full time member operated social club for all clients served by the public mental health system.

The Social Club at Harbor House is an association of adults who share the experience of recovering from a major mental illness.  The Club’s purpose is to provide its members with a supportive environment where social, recreational and learning opportunities are planned and provided by the membership.

There are no dues for participation in the club.  However, the club does provide products from its canteen and frequently sponsors outings and activities for which there is a fee.  However, all fees are set at the lowest possible rate and any proceeds earned are used to support the club.

Club Activities and Opportunities

The Club provides planned activities throughout the week.  Many of the activities include outings to recreational and educational places in the community.

The Club also welcomes members to develop and practice their personal interests at the club such as art, music, crafts, computers or whatever.  The Club staff will assist members in securing necessary materials and work space.

The Club regularly schedules educational groups, wellness activities and social events. Participation is always voluntary and events are planned by the membership.

The Club is always a place to drop in, and members are more than welcome to spend time "hangin' with friends," watching TV or listening to music.

Club Leadership and Rules

The Social Club at Harbor House is governed by a Member’s Council.  The Council works with the Club Coordinator to develop a schedule of activities, oversee Club operations and establish rules of conduct.  The Club is meant for adults who are willing and able to behave like adults.  Anyone, whose behavior fails to respect the rights and well-being of other members, or their own recovery, may be excluded from Club participation.

Hours of Operation

The Club at Harbor House is open 6 days a week.  Hours of operation include day and evening hours and are always posted at the Club.  Hours may vary by season or due to special events

Employment & Volunteer Opportunities

The Social Club at Harbor House provides both volunteer and paid employment opportunities to recovering members.  These opportunities are part-time and, if assistance is required with performing assigned duties, job coaching is available through WorkPlace Associates.  Persons with interest in these opportunities, or the Club in general, should give us a visit or call the Club Coordinator.

The Harbor House is a division of Butler Behavioral Health Services, Inc.
